The San Francisco Zoo needed a new identity and signage system, which had to reflect the zoo’s distinctive qualities. The solution was inspired by the majestic cypress trees that tower over the zoo’s wildlife, a landscape unique to the city. The signage system extended the graphic language established by the identity: silhouetted animal forms and strong typography. The forms were built using materials like wood, steel and concrete that are able to withstand, and beautifully age within the harsh seaside environment.
